Why isn't my team on the list?

Only teams that played in the most recent season are included in the rankings. If your team wasn't part of the season, don't worry, it's still in our data and you'll see it again once it's back in the game.

Why is my team's ranking lower than I expected?

The ranking of each team is determined by a SportsEngine's algorithm and the data we have. The more data we have, the better the calculations will be.

Winning isn't the only factor that affects a team's ranking, though. If your team isn't dominating the competition, its ranking may not be as high, and if there was a forfeit or upset loss, that will significantly affect your rankings. Even a small difference in ratings between two teams means they have an equal chance of winning. It's only when the difference is huge that you'll see a significant predicted outcome. The performance of your state team can also affect your local team's ranking against teams in other states.

How do we come up with the ratings?

Where does the data come from?

For over a decade, we've been compiling results from 1984 from all leagues across Australia for over 7600 games. But that's just the beginning. Our goal is to eventually show our history in an easy-to-understand way by gathering data from 100% of the games ever played in Australia. If you have any data to share, contact us and help us build a complete picture of our past and present.

What do the terms mean?

Here's a quick rundown of some key terms:

• Clubs, Teams, Games, Seasons: These are pretty self-explanatory, right?
• League: A group of teams that play against each other, such as a men's league or a women's league.
• Rating, Adjusted Rating, Weighted Rating: The "rating" a team gets is based on its performance in its league. If the league has multiple divisions, the lower divisions receive a lower weight to reflect the level of competition. The "adjusted rating" is based on the performance of a team's representative team at state team competitions.

Why collect data?

We've been part of the gridiron community for a long time and we've seen people try to rank teams before, but this time we're doing it differently. By using math instead of personal opinions, we're giving you a more accurate picture of how teams are performing.

We love competition, but it can be tough to determine which club is the best without actually playing against each other. That's where SportsEngine comes in! We've collected a ton of results and used advanced formulas to give each team a performance rating.

But the real reason behind this project is that we believe that we can't improve as a sport if we don't know where we've come from. That's why we're not just tracking performance on the field, but also keeping track of administration and individual stats. Trust us, having access to data and statistics will make the sport even more enjoyable.
